Designated Teachers in schools and education settings

What are designated teachers specific responsibilities for Children Previously in Care (CPiC)?

As set out in this statutory guidance The designated teacher for looked-after and previously looked-after children (publishing.service.gov.uk), Designated Teacher’s in schools and settings should:

  • be a central point of contact within the school for children previously in care (CPiC)
  • champion CPiC’s attainment and progress within the school
  • ensure school staff understand the things that can affect how CPiC learn and achieve and any specific support needs that they may have
  • work closely with parents and guardians, encouraging them to participate in discussions about their child’s support needs and strategies that help, including how Pupil Premium Plus could be used to support them
  • ensure the specific needs of CPiC are reflected in how the school uses Pupil Premium Plus to support these children
  • ensure any CPiC at risk of suspension/exclusion gets support to avoid these becoming necessary
  • be aware of Virtual School and the different ways we can support Designated Teacher’s and CPiC
