Apply for school transport

It is anticipated that all schools in Central Bedfordshire will be remaining open next week, as long as it is safe to do so, both in order to comply with government requirements to provide for vulnerable children and for those with a parent identified as a key worker, and to enable plans to be made for the longer term.

Home to school transport will therefore also operate as normal next week to enable pupils to attend. Services will operate to normal timetables.

If it becomes apparent over the weekend, or early on Monday morning, that the school is not able to open, the emergency closure procedures will be activated (as on a ‘snow day’) so that parents will be informed via SOS, and this will also inform the transport provider.

If your child does not normally travel on school transport, but you would like to use the service during this time, you may like to identify an appropriate route that your child could use and ensure that your child is at the appropriate stop at the advertised time: our usual requirement for passengers to have a valid pass will be waived for the time being.

Transport routes may be amended in the coming weeks as the situation becomes clearer: details will be posted on our website in due course.

Your children may be able to get travel assistance to school depending on how far the walk is and any special needs they have.

All children who are in reception year to the end of year 11 qualify for travel assistance if they go to their nearest suitable or catchment school and live at least:

  • 2 miles from the school if they are under 8
  • 3 miles from the school if they are 8 or older. The statutory walking distances are measured by the shortest available walking route
  • live in an area where there are no viable walking routes

Please ensure your application for transport is submitted by the deadline date. Applications received after this time may not be assessed until after October half term.

  • upper and secondary school: 31 March 2020
  • primary, lower and middle school: 18 May 2020

Please note: you can't apply for school transport until we've confirmed your school place. National offer day is 16 April for starting school and middle school.
