Reporting drain blockages, rubbish and pests in private rented housing

How to report a rubbish and pest issue in private rented housing

Rubbish dumped in gardens and other private areas can damage health and encourage the spread of disease.

Our enforcement powers are limited to the types of waste which could attract vermin and cause the spread of disease. This includes food waste and soft materials that will allow rats to make bedding.

We can't enforce the removal of other rubbish such as building rubble, car parts, discarded furniture or electrical equipment. You can take these to one of our tidy tips, or book a bulky waste collection for larger items such as fridges and freezers.

To report a rubbish or pest issue, email psh@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk.

We can:

  • give a warning regarding investigation or enforcement action
  • serve a statutory notice to:
    • clear the land
    • use a pest control company
  • pass on the cost to the person responsible
