Reporting drain blockages, rubbish and pests in private rented housing

How to report a drain issue in private rented housing

Report any issues to your landlord or agent ASAP

You must report any problems with private drains to your landlord or letting agent as soon as possible.

Causes of blocked drains

Most drainage problems are caused by people putting items down sinks and toilets that they shouldn't. Only human waste or toilet paper should be flushed down toilets. Do not flush wet wipes or sanitary products, as they don't break down like toilet paper.

Who's responsible for drains?

Blockages caused by things that shouldn't be there

This is your responsibility, as the tenant. Don't flush anything that you shouldn't.

If the drain is blocked as a result of this, it's up to you to fix it. You also need to tell your landlord.

Flooding

Flooding from private sewers or drains

If your drains or sewers are overflowing, you'll need a specialist to deal with any blockage. If you're not sure if the blockage is in the public or private sewers, your water company should be able to tell you this.
