Council Tax property discounts and exemptions

Family annexe discount

Annexes are areas of living accommodation attached to your main dwelling, which have been separately banded for Council Tax. You normally have to pay the full Council Tax for an annexe, but can get a discount or exemption if it is used by members of your family.

You will get:

  • an exemption (100% discount) on your Council Tax bill for the annexe if it is occupied by an elderly or disabled relative
  • a 50% discount if it is occupied by another family member
  • a 50% discount if the annexe is used by a resident of the main dwelling

If the occupier of the annexe is not a family member of the residents of the main dwelling, the discount will not apply.
