Council Tax - change your details

Council Tax - tell us if you've moved or changed your details

If your circumstances change and you think your Council Tax might be affected, please tell us straight away. We will recalculate your Council Tax and send you a new bill if needed. You must continue to pay the amounts specified on your current bill until you get a new one.

Changes of address

If you’re moving home (either within Central Bedfordshire, into Central Bedfordshire, or out of Central Bedfordshire), the easiest way to tell us is to do it online.

Report your change of address

You can apply for discounts, set up a Direct Debit, and notify other departments of your change of address, all at the same time as reporting your move.

Changes to who is living with you

If there is only one adult living in your property, we will reduce your Council Tax by a 25% Single Person Discount. You need to tell us if you become entitled to the Single Person Discount, or if you stop being entitled to it.

Discounts and reductions

You may be eligible for a discount or reduction in your Council Tax, if you or someone living with you has a change of circumstances (for example, becoming a student or going into residential care).

Read more about Council Tax discounts and exemptions, including information about the discounts available.

You may also be able to get a means-tested reduction in your Council Tax if you’ve had a reduction in your household income. You need to apply for this – it won’t be awarded automatically, even if you start getting Universal Credit or Pension Credit as a result of the change.

Changing your Council Tax payments

The easiest way to pay your Council Tax is by Direct Debit. You can choose from a selection of payment dates, and spread your instalments over 10 or 12 months. You can complete our online Direct Debit form to:

  • set up a new Direct Debit
  • request a different payment date or number of instalments
  • change the bank account that your Direct Debit is taken from

If you are behind with your payments, or struggling to pay your Council Tax, don’t ignore it. We can provide advice and help you by changing your payment dates, frequency or number of instalments.

Any other changes

If you have had other changes which you need to tell us about, please contact us. Examples of the changes you need to report include:

  • changes to the ownership of a property
  • if a partner moves in with you
  • changes to the terms of your tenancy
  • if one of the liable people changes their name
  • if someone aged 18 or over moves in or out of the property
  • if you apply for bankruptcy, an individual voluntary arrangement or debt relief
  • changes affecting your entitlement to a discount or disregard
  • if you stop receiving child benefit for someone who is over 18

Please note: If you report a change, or apply for a reduction, you must continue to pay the amounts specified on your current bill until you get a new one.

To report your changes, please email counciltax@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk.

Please note: Email is not a secure medium. Please take appropriate steps to protect your personal information.

Please quote your Council Tax account reference in all correspondence – your account reference is 8 or 9 digits long and starts with a 4, 7 or 8. You can find it on your Council Tax bill or any letter we’ve sent about your Council Tax.
