Road improvements: Clophill

Background: Clophill roundabout improvements

The primary purpose of the A6/A507 Clophill roundabout improvement scheme is to address the congestion issues at the roundabout, and this is why we were awarded government Levelling Up funding.

Our highways engineers explored four different options for the roundabout:

  • signalised roundabout
  • improved roundabout
  • signalised crossroads
  • hamburger junction

These were modelled and tested to see which design would most effectively address the congestion issues and improve traffic flows, maintain the U-turn required, include pedestrian/cycle facilities, fitted the budget estimate and maintained flexibility for future traffic patterns.

Each proposal was assessed:

  • signalised crossroads – does not support future traffic growth
  • hamburger junction – provides better junction performance but is not flexible to traffic patterns
  • signalised or improved roundabout – both provide a reasonable level of traffic performance

Following consideration of the assessments, the benefits to 2036, the extent of interventions required, future flexibility and the cost implications the improved roundabout option was selected as the preferred option.

This design includes two lanes into and out of the four arms of the roundabout. A new flythrough showing the planned scheme is below:
