Update – 3 May 2023

We need to share news about night time and weekend closures later this week.

The B530 at Kempston Hardwick will be closed for bridge repairs by Network Rail from 9 May to 14 July 2023 with traffic being diverted to the A6.

As we need to remove traffic islands soon to widen the roundabout approaches and exits, at short notice we have proactively revised the works programme to carry out this work before Tuesday 9 May. This avoids a clash and gets this essential work done when there is less traffic on the roads.

It is important preparation work for the Clophill High Street/The Green improvement work.

This keeps the work programme on schedule and, importantly, minimises disruption for road users in the coming months as it will reduce the need for traffic lights during the next phase of work.

Details of the work and the required closures are below:

  • Thursday night/early Friday (4/5 May) – 1am to 5am latest

(A507 east arm – full closure from the roundabout to the footbridge to remove the centre island by the roundabout)

  • Friday night (5/6 May) – 8pm to 5am latest

(A6 south arm – full closure from the roundabout to the petrol station to remove the centre islands)

  • Saturday day (6 May) – 8am to 6pm latest

(A6 north arm – full closure from Clophill Road to the roundabout (including the High Street junction with A6) to remove the centre islands, surfacing of all islands and A6 widening along the western side (compound side)

We do apologise for any inconvenience.

Update – 2 May 2023

The current closure in Clophill Road needs to be extended by two more weeks until

16 May 2023

Due to connections with existing services, we have experienced further delays to the drainage works. Despite this, we are making progress, with the current phase of work still planned to complete at the end of May.

We have re-evaluated the drainage works north of Clophill Road and re-designed the new footway to significantly reduce the traffic management that will be needed to undertake these works.

Two-way traffic lights on the A6 will now only be needed to set up carriageway narrowing barriers, with the above works able to take place with the A6 fully operational.

Please accept our apologies in advance for any inconvenience while the road closures are in place.

Update – 20 April 2023

Our contractor Octavius has published its first newsletter setting out progress to date. You can read this: Works Update – April

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Clophill Road closure highlighted below will now be for three weeks.

To all road users

 – please can you ensure when approaching the roundabout that you do not jump the red lights as this will cause further delays as the traffic lights will need to be reset, which takes about 5 minutes.

Please take into consideration other road users on the roundabout to ensure that people using the other arms of the roundabout give clear access for other vehicles to pass and keep the traffic flowing.

Update – 3 April 2023

The work to ease congestion at the busy junction and build capacity at the roundabout so more vehicles can use it at the same time started on

Monday 13 March 2023.

With our contractor Octavius, we have already made the following progress:

  • set up our site compound
  • on the A6 southbound lane we have formed a new bus layby and widened the road

With works progressing on the southbound carriageway of the A6, we are planning to switch to the northbound lane within the next two weeks.

There are key utility crossings to construct across Clophill Road in front of the site compound which will require a section of Clophill Road by the junction to be closed so we can carry out this work safely. The road closure will be in operation from

Tuesday 11 April 2023 for 2 weeks.

We plan to put signage in place for the road closures over this period.

After this road closure at Clophill Road, there will be a further four weeks of disruption where vehicles can access Clophill Road from the A6 southbound and northbound.  However, unfortunately, your vehicles cannot merge onto the A6 from Clophill Road due to the two-way traffic lights we have in place on the A6.

Update – 2 March 2023

We will complete the site preparation work for Clophill Roundabout improvements shortly and, Octavius, our contractor will soon have its temporary site compound set up in the nearby highway depot. This will be securely fenced and gated and located off the highway to cause minimal disruption for parking and deliveries.

Work will start on the main Clophill roundabout improvements on Monday 13 March.

The work will focus on one arm of the roundabout at a time to minimise disruption and enable road users to continue to use the junction.

We will start with the northern A6 approach. This work will take up to four months to finish before we move on to the eastern A507 arm. Attention will then shift to the southern A6 approach and finally the western A507 arm with the full scheme expected to be complete within one year.

To enable traffic to flow through the junction better we are widening each roundabout arm to create two traffic lanes in and out. As well as easing congestion and reducing queuing, this will help the roundabout support the expected future increases in traffic.

We are introducing new footways and installing three toucan crossings which, together with the retained footbridge, will mean there is a crossing point on all four arms. We will reduce the speed limit on the approaches to 30mph and carry out further measures to improve the roundabout and road safety.

The northern A6 work will require temporary traffic signals and lane narrowing for the health and safety of the workforce. However, we will keep these arrangements to the absolute minimum and avoid peak travel times wherever possible.

The Clophill Road (Maulden) and the Clophill High Street junctions with the A6 will need to be closed for short periods to carry out the improvements at these locations. We will inform people of the dates in advance.

To enable us to re-surface the A6 northern arm we will also need to close the A6 northern section overnight, keeping it open for traffic during the day. Again, this is designed to minimise disruption for road users. These closures will be accompanied by signposted diversions and will take place once the work progresses. We will provide dates on this webpage in due course and road users will also be notified by road signage displayed in advance of the scheduled work.

We will coordinate this scheme with other highway works being undertaken in the area and apologise in advance for any delays and disruption required to carry out the improvements.
