Dial-a-Ride and community bus services

Cost of living support - banner

Dial-a-ride services cover all areas of Central Bedfordshire and are designed to offer a flexible door-to-door service for people who are unable to use ordinary public transport because of frailty or temporary or permanent disability. These services are also available for able-bodied residents who live in areas of Central Bedfordshire where there is no other public transport available; please contact the operator to see what is possible. The vehicles used are constructed for ease of access for all, including wheelchair users.

The staff can give you more assistance than the staff of conventional bus services, should you require it; the drivers can escort you to or from your door, but cannot help you transfer from your wheelchair. You will need to be a member of your local scheme (an annual charge usually applies) and will need to book both the outward and the return part of your journey in advance, giving as much notice as possible. The operator will offer you journeys as close as possible to your desired travel times, but may sometimes need to suggest alternative times in order to accommodate other passengers making similar journeys. The vehicle may also need to divert during the journey to pick up or set down other passengers to enable an efficient service to be offered.

The driver will collect your fare on the bus. If you are a registered member of a dial-a-ride scheme and you have a Central Bedfordshire Concessionary Travel Pass, you are eligible for reduced fares, making dial-a-ride services even better value.

Community bus services

There are also several community bus schemes in operation around Central Bedfordshire. These charitable organisations are staffed by volunteers who give their time to support these locally-based groups. The buses generally operate journeys on a fixed route to several different villages once or twice per week which then continue to a larger town such as Bedford, Milton Keynes, Cambridge, Hitchin and others, calling at many main bus stops on the way. Concessionary bus passes are valid on these services which often provide a vital link between smaller villages and larger towns. Many drivers operate the same routes every week and coupled with regular users create a friendly and welcoming atmosphere on board. Community bus services are available to everyone and are an important part of the public transport network in Central Bedfordshire, complementing services provided by commercial bus operators. There is no need to be a member or to pre-book your travel: just turn up and go. Please contact the operators directly for full details of their routes and services offered.
