Have your say on proposed plans for a new school in Houghton Regis

Tuesday, 4 August 2020

We're seeking your views on the initial designs for a new 1,120-place secondary school, to be built on the Kingsland Campus in Houghton Regis by September 2022.

The school will be located on the east of the Kingsland Campus, adjacent to the leisure centre.

As part of the pre-planning design stage, ahead of a planning application being submitted around the end of August, our proposals are to help inform further design work, including the external appearance of the buildings.

The concept is based on the superblock model, which many schools across the UK have used, and includes a three-storey main teaching block, separate sports block, an all-weather pitch, standard pitches for outdoor sport, and a new car park.

Read more about the proposals and have your say (closes midday, 14 August 2020).

The pre-planning consultation would usually take the form of a public consultation drop-in event, however, under the prevailing circumstances, due to the COVID-19 national health emergency, the consultation and relevant information will be available online.

Councillor Sue Clark, our Executive Member for Families, Education and Children, said:

This is an exciting step towards building a new secondary school in the heart of Houghton Regis and we want to ensure residents can have their say on what that might look like.

As we are near the beginning of the design process, the external design for the new school is subject to more work, so the feedback could help inform that. We have provided examples of other schools which have been built across the UK, using the superblock model, as a point of reference for comment.

While this is not a formal planning consultation, we will use residents’ comments to further develop the proposal and there will be another, more detailed consultation stage once we have submitted a planning application.
