Olympian open day for new leisure and community centre in Houghton Regis

Tuesday, 18 March 2025

The new Houghton Regis Leisure and Community Centre will open to the public on 29 March with a Gala Open Day.

The open day will have free activities, and former Olympians Mark Foster and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey – also famous as Gladiator Nitro – will be trying out the facilities and meeting the public.

The centre is the latest in our delivery of new leisure facilities across the area. Flitwick Leisure Centre opened in 2016, Dunstable Centre opened in 2019, the Sandy Sports and Leisure Centre opened in 2023, and investment continues with the new Leighton Leisure Centre, due for completion in summer 2026.

More than £50 million has been spent on Kingsland Campus in the last couple of years, creating a brand-new leisure centre, a new school for 1,400 pupils, and an extension to Chiltern School to provide more SEND places.

The new centre opens with the Gala Day on 29 March. For leisure centre membership enquiries or to make any other type of booking, contact houghtonregisinfo@everyoneactive.com. Find out more about the Open Day on the Everyone Active website.

Anyone wishing to book the sports hall, which opens on 14 April, should contact the Schools Plus customer service team on 0345 222 2323, seven days a week from 8am to 8pm. Alternatively, you can email them at enquiries@schoolsplus.co.uk.

Councillor Steve Watkins, Executive Member at Central Bedfordshire Council for Leisure, said:

The new Houghton Regis Leisure and Community Centre will include an array of modern, high-quality facilities, offering a range of sports and activities to enjoy. The pool space will be more than double that of the current centre, with an eight-lane, 25-metre community swimming pool, a learner pool with a movable floor, a shallow ‘confidence water’ pool, and a changing village.

There will also be two squash courts, a large fitness suite or gym, two multi-use studios for a range of classes and activities, plus an immersive spinning bike studio experience and community space. This is a fantastic new build that adds to all the other impressive leisure facilities we have across Central Bedfordshire.
