We held a consultation on plans for the new community and leisure facility in early 2022 to seek views from the community.
We reviewed the feedback we received which helped us to refine the planning application submitted. A further planning consultation will take place before the updated plans are determined in the summer.
You can read about our responses to the feedback in a detailed statement of community involvement (PDF) submitted with the updated plans.
Proposals are being put forward for investment into a new, high-quality community and leisure facility on the Kingsland Campus at Houghton Regis following a successful bid for nearly £20 million of government Levelling Up funding announced at the end of October 2021.
The plans are part of a wider initiative to regenerate the Kingsland Campus in Houghton Regis. The facility will serve both the existing and new communities, including the new Houstone School currently under construction.
The new development at Kingsland Campus will offer upgraded, superior leisure provision as recommended in our adopted Leisure Facilities Strategy and provide a positive impact on residents health.
The project is designed to promote healthy and active lifestyles, to provide a welcoming place to meet, socialise and get support.
The proposed site for the new centre is to the south of Sundon Road, at the junction with Parkside Drive.
The proposals include car parking and connected cycleways and footpaths.
Plans include an eight-lane 25-metre community swimming pool, which is more than double the size of the pool at the existing Houghton Regis Leisure Centre. There will be a dedicated learner pool with a movable floor to raise or lower the depth for swimming lessons and a separate splash pool.
A large, state-of-the-art, fitness suite and exercise studios will provide dedicated spaces for a range of different classes. 2 squash courts will also feature.
Plans include a cafe, community space, a creche, a children’s outdoor play zone, an outdoor fitness trail and enjoyable public areas.
Enhanced landscaping and planting will surround the centre, with improved walking and cycling routes across the Kingsland Campus linking up with the new Houstone School.
Car parking, cycle parking and bus drop-off areas are all included in the plans.
