Home ownership: leaseholders, shared ownership and repairs

Leaseholders

If you own your home on a lease, you are responsible for paying service charges and ground rent. You also have rights that protect you as a leaseholder.

Your lease

Your lease sets out what you must do and what the council is responsible for. It covers areas such as:

  • how service charges and ground rent are set and when to pay
  • buildings insurance and what is covered
  • selling your home, including permissions and checks you may need
  • staircasing (buying more shares in your home)
  • alterations and when you must ask for consent
