Consultation: Tenancy Strategy

About our Tenancy Strategy consultation

We're looking to update our Tenancy Strategy for social housing. We're proposing a change to the types of tenancies that we offer and we would like to know to what extent you support these proposals.

The Localism Act 2011 requires that all local housing authorities prepare and publish a tenancy strategy setting out the kinds of tenancy they will grant and the circumstances under which they will grant them.

It requires us to set out:

  • the types of tenancies we will grant
  • the circumstances in which we will grant tenancies of a particular type
  • if tenancies are granted for a fixed-term, the length of those tenancies
  • the circumstances in which a further tenancy will be granted on the coming to an end of an existing tenancy

The Tenancy Strategy also sets out a way social housing providers in our area should let their properties to meet the needs of residents. We're proposing to end our use of flexible fixed-term tenancies, something which several registered providers in Central Bedfordshire have already chosen to do.
