Join our Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Register

The Self-Build and Custom Housebuilding Act 2015 (as amended) requires all local councils in England to maintain a register of individuals and groups interested in self-build or custom-build housing in their area.

This helps us track the demand and develop strategies for delivering serviced plots for self-build and custom-build housing.

We will not find specific plots for people on the register, but will provide details of potential opportunities which have been secured through Local Plan policy requirements.

The fee to join the register

Legislation permits us to charge a fee to cover administrative costs in maintaining the register. The fee is £90.

Registration is valid for 3 years. Individuals and groups need to pay to be included on the register.

Why the register is maintained

The register helps us track demand for self-build and custom-build housing, ensuring that policies support local housing needs.

Eligibility criteria

To join, you must:

  • be 18 or older
  • be a British Citizen, a national of a EEA State other than the UK, or a national of Switzerland
  • have paid the fee to enter or remain on the register
  • be seeking (either alone or with others) to acquire a serviced plot of land in Central Bedfordshire and are to build a house to occupy as that individual’s sole or main residence

If you don’t meet all the above criteria, you are not eligible to go on the register.
