About this job

Woodland Middle School is a very welcoming and warm school. Pupils and staff are happy because our school Values are a central part of everything we do. The school is popular with parents because our pupils achieve well regardless of their needs, in both their academic and personal growth. The school is popular with pupils as there are so many positive experiences that support helpful feelings and valued behaviour. Staff join the Woodland Team and love the school’s ethos and collegiality; they stay for a career meaning we rarely struggle to recruit or retain our staff.

We are seeking to appoint the following to start after Easter 2026.

Assistant Headteacher (SENDCO)
Salary Level Leadership Spine 5-9
Full Time / Permanent Position
No teaching commitment

We are seeking an experienced SENDCO to join us as an Assistant Headteacher (AHT) from Easter 2026. This vacancy is available after a reshuffle in our Senior Leadership Team (SLT) affording you an excellent mentor as the current SENDCO – Ms Gibson – will be able to work alongside you for a term and then line manage you thereafter in her new Deputy Headteacher role.

At Woodland Middle School, we have a values-based ethos meaning we have an inclusive, therapeutic and relational practice.   Families trust us to support their child with SEND and as a result, we have over 50 children with EHCPs.  Necessarily, we have a large SEND department for you to lead including the SEND Team Leader, a SEND Administrator, 25 Teaching Assistants and a SEND specialist teacher.

This role will only suit an experienced and qualified SENDCO with a proven track record.  There will be no teaching responsibilities, your entire week will be devoted to ensuring the best possible practice is in place for all pupils with SEND. The department has a dedicated workspace and a private office and also five discrete SEND teaching spaces. These spaces allow for bespoke timetables for our pupils with the most complex needs as well as break out spaces for intervention groups. Each SEND space has a specialist room lead delivering the learning.

The department also runs its own internal and external programme of Alternative Provision (AP).

We have a highly supportive leadership team and the opportunity to work with our amazing pupils and colleagues in a warm and caring Values-based culture.

Please Note: All appointments to Woodland Middle School Academy have rigorous safeguarding checks including references and an enhanced DBS check.
