If you handle animal feed
You must register your business with us if you:
- produce or grow crops for animal feed
- import or distribute animal feed
- store or transport animal feed
- sell or use animal feed for farm animals
There is no fee to register.

Keeping animal feed safe
You must follow hygiene rules to keep animal feed safe. These rules help stop contamination and protect animals and people.
There are 3 sets of rules:
- Annex 1 – for farms that grow or produce feed (PDF 62.1KB)
- Annex 2 – for all other feed businesses (PDF 136.8KB)
- Annex 3– for good feeding practices (PDF 52.6KB)

If you grow or produce food
You must register your business with us if you:
- grow crops for food
- raise animals or their products for food
There is no fee to register.
Keeping food safe
You must follow basic hygiene rules to ensure food produced is kept safe. This includes:
- preventing contamination coming from air, soil, water, fertilisers, pesticides and veterinary medicines
- keeping animals and pests away from food products
- handling waste properly
- only using clean water
- keeping facilities and equipment clean
Good record keeping will help you show that your food is safe.
