Current position regarding Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) in school buildings in Central Bedfordshire
Monday, 11 September 2023
Position statement from Central Bedfordshire Council regarding Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC) - as of 11 September 2023.
We continue to monitor Central Bedfordshire Council buildings in relation to some concerns about the use of a specific type of concrete, Reinforced Autoclaved Aerated Concrete (RAAC), which has been found in buildings across the country.
Through our rolling programme of maintenance checks, we have not identified evidence of any RAAC in Council buildings.
Last week, we visually checked all Council-maintained schools, including early years provision, plus 38 Council-owned buildings including care homes and children’s homes.
We will continue these checks today and, in accordance with government guidance, more detailed inspections will begin this week for Council-maintained schools, with up to 25 likely to be conducted this week.
We have also been in contact with academy schools to offer support with their own checks, as per the DfE guidance.
Parents should continue to send their children to school unless they hear directly from their school.
This statement sets out the current position in Central Bedfordshire.
We will continue to update this statement if new information becomes available.
