Another chance to show an old bike some love

We're again calling for unwanted and outgrown bikes to be donated to their bike recycling scheme.

We're again calling for unwanted and outgrown bikes to be donated to their bike recycling scheme.

Donated bikes will be refurbished, made road-worthy and found new homes. The refurbished bikes are available to residents at low cost, or provided free to those on limited incomes.

Many of the recycled bikes are given to young people to get to school or college; unemployed people to travel to new jobs; as lifelines for those who are feeling isolated; or to help those who are recuperating to get fit again.

So if you’re still spring cleaning and have a bike that you no longer use, why not bring it along to Priory House, the council’s offices at Chicksands near Shefford, on Monday 24 June between 8am and 2pm.

Councillor Ian Dalgarno, our Executive Member for Community Services, said: "This is a fantastic recycling scheme which gives bikes to help others who may otherwise be unable to afford a bike.

“In many cases, these recycled bikes have changed lives; some have helped long-term unemployed people get back into work, and others have provided a source of transport and independence for children in care.

“We are always looking at different ways that we can reduce waste and encouraging residents to re-use and recycle is a great way to achieve this! We hope to see lots of resident and their bikes on 24 June”.

An impressive 75 bikes were collected at the council’s last event, which was held in Ampthill on 20 April. Many of the bikes have already been refurbished and made road-worthy through the recycling scheme, and are ready to find proud new owners.

We would recommend any resident thinking of buying a new bike to consider buying a recycled bike through the bike recycling scheme. If you have any questions about bike recycling or you’d like to get a list of the bikes currently available, email the Travel Choices team travelchoices@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk or call on 01582 813018.
