Government funding to boost nature in Bedfordshire

Tuesday, 4 July 2023

Bedfordshire gets £238,000 funding to support nature recovery and biodiversity. Locally-led Local Nature Recovery Strategy will help natural habitats flourish.

Bedfordshire will receive around £238,000 funding over the next 2 years from central government to help nature thrive in the area.

We have been announced as the responsible authority for the creation of a Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) for Bedfordshire. LNRS is a new requirement of the Environment Act 2021.

The funding will support work over the next 2 years to create a Local Nature Recovery Strategy focusing on nature recovery, enhanced biodiversity, associated climate change and sustainability benefits.

We will work with Bedford Borough Council and Luton Borough Council, the Local Nature Partnership, farmers, landowners, communities, and other organisations on this locally-led initiative to help natural habitats flourish in our area.

Councillor Mary Walsh, our Executive Member for planning and development, said:

We are delighted to have secured this funding and be appointed as the Responsible Authority for Bedfordshire.

We look forward to working with our partners to promote nature recovery in the area and to support biodiversity and climate change objectives.
