Free maths courses this National Numeracy Day

Wednesday, 17 May 2023

This National Numeracy Day (17 May), the Bedfordshire Employment and Skills Academy (BESA) can help people with their everyday maths skills.

The courses are free and cover topics including understanding bills, budgeting, saving, as well as offering ‘first steps’ bitesize maths workshops.

As well as maths, numeracy includes things like budgeting at home or understanding data at work. BESA offers a number of courses to support people to build confidence using numbers in their everyday lives. These include:

  • online courses so learners can brush up on their skills in their own time
  • courses for parents and carers to support children with maths at school
  • five-week courses covering key maths skills, helping learners to work towards starting a level 2 qualification
  • accredited Functional Skills maths qualifications, level 1 and 2 with City & Guilds (level 2 is equal to a GCSE grade C or 4)

We also run Multiply courses for adults who do not already have a GCSE grade C or 4 or higher in maths, and need to improve their numeracy.

Sessions are delivered in small, tutor-led groups in local community venues or virtually on Microsoft Teams.

One participant said:

I loved the Multiply workshops as I have gained more confidence with numbers and how to practice them in everyday life.

The interaction between the tutor and the other learners was great. It was good to be able to do activities online as well as on paper. The course has been set in a way that enables me to understand what is being taught. I liked the way the tutor gave feedback in an encouraging way.
