Community planting day in celebration of new woodland site

Monday, 27 February 2023

We are inviting residents of Beeston and surrounding towns and villages to attend a community planting day on Saturday 4 March 2023 to celebrate a new woodland site being planted in their area.

We are working in partnership with the Forest of Marston Vale as part of Trees for Climate, a national programme being delivered by England’s Community Forests. As outlined in our Sustainability Plan – this project is an example of the push towards achieving net zero by 2030, commitment to tree planting and providing a new amenity for residents to enjoy.

The project has been made possible through the work of the Government’s England Trees Action Plan. 33,000 new trees, areas of shrubs and a community orchard will be planted in total.

Work is underway to plant the community woods in Beeston and members of the public are invited to come along from 10.30 am onwards to plant a tree on the site – wellies and a spade are encouraged! 1,000 trees are available for people to plant. The location entrance point can be found using the location app What3words, typing in the reference///squeaks.required.snug.

Councillor Steven Dixon, Executive Member for Sustainability and Public Protection, said:

We’re pleased to be able to offer another community tree planting opportunity and we continue to work hard in fighting the climate challenge. One of the most effective ways to tackle many climate impacts is by planting trees.

I hope the residents and surrounding communities of Beeston will be able to enjoy this new woodland for generations to come as it fully matures, creating new biodiversity for everyone to enjoy. I encourage anyone local to Beeston and able to attend the planting day to come along and give as much or little time as you can. You will be helping to make a difference in your local environment.

James Russell, Forest Director at The Forest of Marston Vale, said:

Community engagement sits at the heart of the Forest of Marston Vale so we’re delighted to be able to partner with Central Bedfordshire and give local people the chance to be part of the creation of new woodland that will benefit their community and serve as a lasting legacy for future generations.
