Central Bedfordshire stands together with Ukraine

Tuesday, 19 April 2022

Our councillors unanimously backed a motion to stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine.

At a Full Council meeting on Thursday, 14 April 2022, councillors passed a motion to stand with Ukraine and condemn, unreservedly, the unjustifiable and illegal actions of the Russian state by invading Ukraine and deploying alarmingly brutal military tactics.

Councillor Richard Wenham, Leader of Central Bedfordshire Council said:

The ongoing atrocities we are seeing in Ukraine are appalling.

It’s hard to take in the terrible scenes coming out of Ukraine on a daily basis. Our thoughts and prayers remain with all those directly affected, as well as their friends and family across the world.

I’d like to acknowledge and thank our residents who have responded to the plight of the Ukrainian people with enormous generosity and kindness. The community response has been truly remarkable and an uplifting reminder of the good in the world.

We all share the sentiment that we should do all that we can to welcome and support those who come here. We’ve set up a dedicated liaison team to support refugees and residents who have offered their homes through the government's Homes for Ukraine scheme. I know our communities will do everything they can to help Ukrainians resettle here and feel welcomed.

Donations can be made to Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). DEC brings together 15 charities, and your donations will help DEC charities provide food, water, shelter and healthcare to refugees and displaced families.
