Central Bedfordshire encouraged to plant a tree for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

Tuesday, 22 March 2022

We have completed our tree planting pilot, with approximately 300 garden trees given away to be planted in homes across the area.

Officers from the council gave a free tree to residents at events and markets in Dunstable, Biggleswade, Houghton Regis and Leighton Buzzard as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy celebrations, encouraging them to plant a tree for the Jubilee.

The trees, hawthorn, birch and field maple were available on a first-come-first-serve basis and officers explained how to plant and take care of the trees, with residents completing a tree adoption care form.

Following the success of the pilot, we will be planning more tree giveaway events across different towns in Central Bedfordshire in the Autumn, in line with the tree planting season.

Councillor Steven Dixon, Executive Member for Sustainability and Transformation, said:

The tree giveaway has been a great opportunity for residents to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in a memorable and sustainable way, watching their tree grow year on year. It also reminds people of the importance trees and hedgerows play in our local environment and increasing biodiversity is a great way to enhance wildlife and improve air quality.

For more information on planting trees or hedgerows, we've created an online guide on where to plant, permission, choosing what to plant and caring.

Tree planting for the Queens Green Canopy ‘plant a tree for the Jubilee’ will continue for the next tree planting season which will commence in November 2022 and end in March 2023.
