Central Bedfordshire Council Crematorium application approved

Thursday, 17 March 2022

A crematorium is set to be built off Fordfield Road in Steppingley, near Flitwick, following approval from our Development Management Committee, subject to following due process.

The crematorium will be the first in Central Bedfordshire and will enable local people to say goodbye to loved ones who have passed away in an appropriate setting closer to home.

Services will be delivered between 9am to 5pm on Monday to Friday and construction is expected to take 12 to 18 months.

The location of the crematorium is away from homes and public roads and will have additional landscaping, including a tree lined approach, remembrance garden, meadows and a lake, minimising the impact on the existing landscape and making it a serene place for remembrance.

Councillor Eugene Ghent, Executive Member for Assets and Housing Delivery, said:

The crematorium is a necessary addition to our community and will allow us to provide the right location and services for families to say goodbye to their loved ones in a peaceful setting. Families will also no longer have to wait as long or travel as far, and this will be a significant benefit at what can be a sad time in people’s lives.

The building will be open 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and the gardens will be open for residents to use and enjoy, with associated parking.
