We're supporting local families with food vouchers in October half term

Thursday, 21 October 2021

We'll be supporting the families of over 7,000 children with food costs during the October half term.

Families will receive a £15 voucher for every child eligible for free school meals, which they can spend at supermarkets including:

  • Tesco
  • Asda
  • Morrisons
  • Sainsbury's
  • Aldi
  • Iceland
  • Waitrose

In total, 7,103 children in Central Bedfordshire will receive support during the break.

The support is being funded through the government’s Household Support Fund, which is designed to support vulnerable households across the country during the winter.

Councillor Sue Clark, our Executive Member for Families, Education and Children, said:

The pandemic has put pressure on families, and we’re delighted to be providing vouchers to families in need in Central Bedfordshire again. We hope families will find these vouchers helpful, and that they will make things a little bit easier during half term.

The October half term support builds on our continuing support for vulnerable families during the pandemic, including a programme of holiday activities over the summer for 1,700 children and young people from disadvantaged families which was funded by the government’s Holiday Activities and Food programme. A similar programme will return during the Christmas holiday.

The October half term begins on 25 October for one week, and we've started distributing food vouchers to eligible families.
