Central Bedfordshire Council and Cornerstone (East Anglia) Ltd. highly commended for their Large-Scale Project at the East of England Energy Efficiency Awards 2020/21

Central Bedfordshire Council (CBC) and Cornerstone (East Anglia) Ltd. was honoured with a highly commended award in the 2020/2021 East of England Energy Efficiency Awards.

The event, held at the Waltham Abbey Mariott Hotel on Thursday 29 September, and the category was Regional Large-Scale Project (>250k) of the Year.

This award recognises one exceptional project and the efforts of all those involved in delivering a successful large-scale energy-saving project, whilst maintaining excellent customer service and demonstrating a high standard of quality workmanship throughout the project.

The highly commended award was for our project to externally insulate 99 of the 1,200+ privately owned park homes inhabited by low-income households in the local authority area. The project was made possible through a £1m Green Homes Grant from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). Working throughout the Covid-19 lockdown periods and, dealing with disruptions in the supply chain the works were completed on time and, to budget, and used all of the grant funding allocated by BEIS.

The grant has seen the fabric of 99 park homes improved at Three Star Park, Lower Stondon and Whipsnade Park, Whipsnade. By taking a fabric first approach the thermal efficiency and the comfort of all the properties has been improved by at least one Energy Performance Certificate band rating. The works have the additional benefit of improving the structural integrity of the homes which will reduce property maintenance requirements in the future. It is estimated that residents will save £105 annually in energy costs and see a reduction of 60 tonnes of C02 a year that will contribute to our sustainability plan to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The award was received on behalf of Central Bedfordshire Council by Jonathan Arnold (Private Sector Housing Manager) and Rachel Shalan (Private Sector Housing Team) together with Cornerstone (East Anglia) Ltd representative Matt Nowell (Projects Director at Cornerstone (East Anglia) Ltd.

Executive Member for Assets and Housing Councillor Eugene Ghent said:

We are thrilled to have our project recognised by this year’s Energy Efficiency Awards. Residents have told us that the improvements have already made a positive difference to their lives by reducing fuel costs and having improved the comfort and appearance of their homes.

Matt Nowell, Projects Director from Cornerstone said:

We are delighted to have been part of such an ambitious and successful project. We have worked together with the council to deliver the much-needed improvements to a high technical standard whilst also achieving great feedback from customers, which makes the job worthwhile. We are also pleased to have been able to create local jobs both directly and across our supply chain as part of this scheme.
