Exciting plans to improve sports facilities in Sandy gets the green light

Tuesday, 8 June 2021

Central Bedfordshire’s Executive has approved proposals to consult on improving the indoor leisure offer in Sandy.

The scheme to extend the Jenkins Pavilion at Sunderland Recreation Ground will enable more people to access high-quality sports facilities.

This is an important next step in our partnership work with Sandy Town Council to re-provide and improve gym and studio facilities which were previously provided at Sandy Secondary school but are required for educational use from September 2023. Sandy Secondary school will continue to provide their school sports facilities for community use.

The Jenkins extension proposal will enhance the existing range of sports facilities at Sunderland Road which include grass football and cricket pitches, floodlit all-weather pitch and athletics track, creating a sports hub for Sandy residents.

A public consultation will be launched soon for people to have their say on the proposed Jenkins improvement proposals.

The proposed extension would provide:

  • two full size, purpose-built exercise studios
  • larger gym (approximately 55 stations)
  • a flexible studio space for spin bikes and other activities
  • reception, office, accessible toilets and lift

Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing and Communities, Councillor Tracey Stock said:

Investment into the Jenkins Pavilion facility will provide many benefits to sports clubs and the wider community. Access to health and leisure facilities is a priority to be able to support healthy communities across Central Bedfordshire. We have a great opportunity to redefine the leisure offering for Sandy and better serve the needs of the community.
