Etonbury ‘Green Wheel’ Walking Route to formally open on Sunday, 19 May

Wednesday, 15 May 2019

The Etonbury Green Wheel walking route will be formally opened this Sunday, 19 May.

The public are invited to come along and join one of three free guided walks to celebrate the official launch of the walking route.

The Etonbury Green Wheel links the communities of Stotfold, Arlesey and Fairfield using paths which pass through and beside areas of landscape, heritage and wildlife interest. Etonbury Wood lies at the ‘hub’ of the wheel and is connected to the ‘rim’ of the wheel using access ‘spokes’.

Guided walks using parts of the Etonbury Green Wheel will leave the following locations at 1pm and will finish at the Fox and Duck pub adjacent to Etonbury Wood:

  • Mill Lane, Arlesey (adjacent to the Railway Footbridge) (approx. 3.5 miles)
  • Stotfold Mill, Mill Lane, Stotfold (approx. 2.5 miles)
  • The Obelisk, East Orchard off Palmerstone Way, Fairfield (approx. 2 miles)

The public are welcome to come along to one of the guided walks or simply attend the launch at 3pm at Etonbury Wood. After the launch, there will be a guided tour of Etonbury Wood and an Xplorer event for children. Refreshments will be available from the Fox and Duck Pub, Stotfold Road from 2pm to 5pm, and local organisations will have stalls providing information on their activities.

The events will be free of charge, with refreshments available to purchase from the Fox and Duck Pub, Stotfold Road, which will also have toilet facilities and limited parking. Dogs on leads and children will be welcome.

Jill Dickinson, our Assistant Director Leisure, Libraries and Countryside, said: "The health benefits of walking in the fresh countryside air are well documented. We hope that this green wheel will help encourage our residents to go out into the countryside more, and enjoy all the beautiful rural scenery that Central Bedfordshire has to offer.

"There are a number of landmarks and places of local interest which will be accessible from the green wheel, such as the Kingfisher Way and Hicca Way walks; the Great North Cycleway (National Cycle Route 12); Etonbury Wood; Stotfold Watermill nature reserve; the Blue and Green Lagoons."

The Etonbury Green Wheel is a partnership between Central Bedfordshire Council, Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity (BRCC), Stotfold Town Council, Arlesey Town Council and Fairfield Parish Council.
