Public health expert explains how to protect yourself and others from coronavirus

Wednesday, 7 October 2020

Our public health lead explains, in a video, the simple measures we can all take to protect, ourselves, our friends and loved ones from coronavirus, as infections rise nationally and locally.

Celia Shohet says:

Sadly, last week we reported the first death for some time in Central Bedfordshire due to Coronavirus, as well as an increasing number of infections.

These aren’t just numbers; they are people and they could be any of us. The virus isn’t choosey about who it infects, anyone can catch it and spread it.

“Even though most people who have had the virus didn’t need to go into hospital, we shouldn’t be complacent. The virus can be really nasty for some people and have a lasting effect including breathlessness and fatigue. Even people who are generally younger, fit and healthy can suffer.

In the video, Celia explains the best way to protect ourselves and our loved ones, is to:

  • wash our hands regularly
  • wear a face covering and
  • keep 2 metres from people we don’t live with

It’s also important to self-isolate and get tested, if you have symptoms

Symptoms to check for are:

  • new, continuous, cough
  • high temperature
  • loss or change of taste or smell

You can book a test through the NHS website or call 119.

Celia adds:

Let’s do everything we can to look after ourselves and look after others. We know we can make a difference; we’ve done it before, and we can do it again.
