Central Bedfordshire Council joins in national week of appreciation for volunteers

Tuesday, 2 June 2020

Central Bedfordshire Council is joining in with National Volunteers’ Week 2020 by saying ‘thank you’ to volunteers throughout Central Bedfordshire who have stepped up to make a difference to others.

Councillor Tracey Stock, Executive Member for Health & Wellbeing and Communities, said:

This year, more than ever, people have come together to help out their neighbours and their wider communities. Many have never volunteered before but, following a request for volunteers to help during the coronavirus emergency, the response has been incredible. The 44 Good Neighbour schemes across Central Bedfordshire that provide day-to-day practical support and companionship for our more vulnerable and lonely residents is just one example of the many ways in which volunteers are helping others. I’m aware of many groups that are making a difference in their communities. I’m volunteering for a support group in my Ward, taking calls from shielded residents who need support with shopping and prescriptions runs. Local volunteers have been amazing. There are lots of ways that people are helping throughout pandemic, from making PPE to assisting in food banks, whatever their contribution, I’m delighted to be able to offer my thanks.

Of course, it’s not just during a national emergency that volunteers play an important role, many people across Central Bedfordshire give their time, energy and commitment to make a difference throughout the rest of the year. For the last six years, and to coincide with National Volunteers’ Week, we’ve held an annual ‘Cheering Volunteering’ awards ceremony to celebrate their contribution. However, as with so many events, this year’s awards scheme and ceremony was postponed. We do, however, hope to relaunch it in the Autumn. Which is why it’s more important than ever to recognise the fantastic work of our wonderful volunteers who do so much to help others.

Throughout the week the council will be showcasing the work of volunteers on its social media platforms using the hashtag #VolunteersWeek2020.
