Honeysuckle Sculpture takes root in Flitwick's Red Kite Meadows Community Garden, ahead of final site handover

Tuesday, 24 February 2026

We've marked a key milestone at Red Kite Meadows as the striking five‑metre‑high Honeysuckle flower sculpture was moved into position forming the centrepiece of the new senior living village.

The honeysuckle sculpture, outside Red Kite Meadows in Flitwick.

Created by UK sculptor and public artist Andrew McKeown, the nature‑inspired sculpture stands at the heart of the landscaped community garden. Its giant honeysuckle form reinforces the village’s strong connection to the natural environment and highlights the important role that nature plays in supporting health, wellbeing and a sense of calm.

The artwork emerged from a collaborative process between the artist and residents of Ferndale Care Home, who took part in two creative workshops exploring themes connected to the new Senior Living Village. Together, they focused on the plants and flowers after which the 3 main areas were named Honeysuckle, Camellia, and Meadowsweet. The honeysuckle was chosen for its symbolism and creative potential, ultimately inspiring the impressive sculpture unveiled today.

Councillor Mark Smith, our Executive Member for Adult Social Care, said:

The honeysuckle sculpture is a beautiful focal point and a powerful symbol of the community spirit we want Red Kite Meadows to embody. As we move toward taking full possession of the site, this artwork signals the beginning of a new chapter and one where residents can enjoy modern, sustainable homes within a welcoming and vibrant village environment.

The is the latest phase in the development of Red Kite Meadows, which has transformed the former Flitwick Leisure Centre site into a state‑of‑the‑art Passivhaus‑designed senior living village. The project forms a key part of our long‑term strategy to modernise and expand high‑quality care provision across the area.

The next major milestone will take place in the coming months as we prepare to take full possession of the site. This will be followed by operational preparations and phased handovers ahead of welcoming the first residents in early spring 2026.
