We've launched a public consultation on Active Travel Strategy
Wednesday, 19 November 2025
We're inviting local residents, businesses, and community groups to take part in a public consultation on our new Active Travel Strategy.
The strategy aims to see more than half of all local trips in major towns made on foot, by bike, or using mobility aids by 2030. It focuses on improving everyday travel, from journeys to school and work to trips to shops, stations, and leisure destinations.
Key objectives of the strategy include:
- investing in high-quality walking, wheeling, and cycling routes and secure cycle parking at key destinations such as schools, train stations, and leisure centres
- improving street safety, air quality, and accessibility, while reducing traffic congestion and the risk of collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists
- expanding opportunities for cycling sports and recreation, including BMX tracks, pump tracks, and mountain bike trails, to encourage active lifestyles
- encouraging developers and planners to design new housing and infrastructure that supports active travel from the outset
We're also exploring innovative solutions such as on-street cycle hangars, secure cycle hubs at railway stations, and enhanced signage and route networks to make active travel more convenient and appealing for everyone.
Our Executive Member for Sustainability and Climate Resilience, Councillor Tracey Wye, said:
We want to make walking, wheeling, and cycling the natural choice for short local trips. This strategy will create safer streets, healthier communities, and more accessible travel options, but we need input from our residents to make it work for everyone.
