Have your say on how parents and pupils can be encouraged to travel to school without relying on their car

We're consulting on our Sustainable Modes of Travel to School Strategy.

Sustainable travel includes walking, cycling, wheeling (using mobility aids or scooters), and using public transport. Promoting these travel options helps children stay active, build independence, interact with peers, and reduces traffic congestion and air pollution around schools.

The strategy sets out the actions that we, schools, parents and pupils can take.

Walking initiatives include Park and Stride, Walking Buses, and national awareness campaigns like Walk to School Week.

Cycling and scooter training, cycle parking and safer cycling routes, including segregated paths can all encourage more cycling and wheeling to and from school.

The strategy also includes rolling out more School Streets where traffic is restricted for short periods at school drop off and collection times.

Our Executive Member for Sustainability and Climate Resilience, Councillor Tracey Wye, said:

Encouraging pupils to use sustainable methods of transport will improve their health and wellbeing, and reduce congestion and pollution for everyone.

Our strategy sets out how we can work with schools to support as many families as possible to walk, cycle, wheel or use public transport to get to and from school.
