Progress on new SEND provision

Tuesday, 14 October 2025

Key milestones have been reached in new additional resource provision (ARP) projects, increasing specialist school places for children and young people with SEND in Central Bedfordshire.

Our Executive approved the creation of a 24-place ARP at Sandy Secondary School for students with cognitive and learning difficulties. This follows a successful consultation and statutory notice process, with 100% of respondents supporting the proposal.

Meanwhile, building work has been completed on a new 12-place social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) ARP at Shefford Lower School, which will be ready for pupils after this month's half term break. This purpose-built facility will provide a safe and supportive environment for pupils, enabling them to access mainstream education with tailored support.

Looking ahead, we're also preparing to open a new SEMH primary school, operated by Larwood School, at Beech Road in Dunstable this December 2025, until the permanent site at the former Pulloxhill Lower school site is open. This project will further strengthen local provision and reduce the need for out-of-area placements.

Councillor Steve Owen, our Executive Member for Children’s Services and Community Safety, said:

We are proud to be delivering high-quality SEND provision right here in Central Bedfordshire. These new additional resource provisions reflect our commitment to ensuring every child can access the support they need, close to home and within their community. By investing in inclusive education, we’re helping children thrive and reach their full potential.

These developments form part of our Specialist School Place Plan, which aims to meet growing demand for SEND places and ensure children with education, health and care plans (EHCPs) receive the right support in the right setting.
