Thursday, 15 August 2019

This morning (15 August) students all over Central Bedfordshire discovered the outcome of studying hard over the last two years.

On a busy day across 10 colleges and sixth forms in Central Bedfordshire, early indications for provisional A-level results show an increase in the average points score per entry across Central Bedfordshire of 1.2 points to 30.96 (C+ grade).

The average score for academic students (which includes those doing extended A-Levels) is 31.06 (C+ grade), up 1.2 points from 2018.

The average point score per entry for applied general studies saw a 1.9 point increase to 29.1 (average Merit+ grade).

And there have been plenty of individual success stories too.

Ten students from All Saints Academy have received a university place and many are pursuing apprenticeships in a vocational setting, for example in the health and leisure sectors.

Kyle Lynch from All Saints Academy achieved the grades he needed to go on to study journalism at university and Amber James has been offered a place at Nottingham University to study Nursing.

Special congratulations go to Matthew Bull and Thomas Walker from Harlington Upper School. Both students were awarded three A* grades in Chemistry, Maths and Physics. Matthew will now study Mechanical Engineering at University of Leeds and Thomas will study Aeronautics at University of Southampton.

A number of successful students secured their university placements from Manshead CE Academy including Courtney Alnaggar and Michael Bordiak. Both achieved an A* and two A grades and are going to study English and History at Nottingham University and Physics at Loughborough University respectively.

A particularly remarkable individual performance at Queensbury Academy was Sam Graham who achieved three impressive A* grades, an A and a B grade.

Top performer this year from Stratton Upper School was Matt Pittkin with four A*s, who will now go on to study Physics at Nottingham University.

Eight students at Cedar Upper School achieved more than one A grade with Chris Lenthal gaining an impressive two A*s and two As.

At Redbourne Upper School at least 96% of students have been accepted on to courses that they wanted or offered a reserve choice and three students have been accepted into Cambridge.

Lucas Lyko from Samuel Whitbread Academy achieved three A*s and an A is off to study Geography at St Catherine’s College, Oxford. After opening his results, he said: “I would like to thank all the teachers for all their help and support over the last few years, especially the Sixth Form team who work really hard and support everyone to get what they need. I am so pleased for all the year group and I wish them all the luck in the world.”

Abby Collins, from Vandyke Upper School, achieved three A grades and will be going to study Medicine at the University of Newcastle. “I logged on to the UCAS site very early and it just popped up to say I’d got my place,” Abby said. “I was relieved of course then came into school to get my grades. I needed AAB to get in and am delighted to have got AAA. I have 7 years of hard study ahead now as a medical student but it’s what I want to do.”

Councillor Sue Clark, Central Bedfordshire Council’s Executive Member for Families, Education and Children.

Congratulations to everyone who collected their A-level results. Sixth form courses are demanding, and students deserve every credit for their achievements. This is an exciting time for them, and they deserve our congratulations and best wishes whatever their next steps.
