Families enjoy a summer of fun across Central Bedfordshire
Tuesday, 16 September 2025
Families made the most of activities on offer across Central Bedfordshire during the summer holidays.
From countryside trails and outdoor theatre to arts and crafts in libraries and children’s centres, residents enjoyed a wide variety of opportunities to spend time together, try new things and explore everything the area has to offer. Many activities were free or low-cost, helping families enjoy the summer without stretching budgets.
Libraries were busy throughout the summer, hosting craft and colouring sessions, LEGO and DUPLO play, creative writing workshops and board games, alongside the ever-popular Summer Reading Challenge which encouraged children to discover new books and a love of storytelling.
One parent said:
My son just loves coming to Dunstable Library every time and the Summer Reading Challenge inspires him to read more books.
Our children’s centres also proved popular, with families enjoying local walks, picnics and outdoor play, as well as messy play, cooking sessions and other creative activities. Sessions designed for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) were well attended, including swimming sessions at leisure centres and sensory play groups at children’s centres.
We also supported families with the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, providing eligible children with access to free activities alongside healthy meals. Sessions included sports, games, arts and crafts, helping children stay active, explore new interests, and enjoy a summer of memorable experiences.
And families were able to enjoy destinations like Dunstable Downs, Rushmere Country Park, Houghton Hall Park and the Forest of Marston Vale for outdoor days out.
Councillor Steve Owen, our Executive Member for Children’s Services, said:
We are thrilled that so many families were able to enjoy the activities and opportunities on offer this summer. By providing a wide range of free and low-cost events, every child has had the chance to have fun, learn new things, and create lasting memories. Whether exploring the great outdoors, taking part in creative sessions, or simply spending quality time together, it’s been wonderful that families have been able to make the most of everything available across Central Bedfordshire.
