We celebrated achievements of our children in care and care experienced young people

We held a celebration event on Thursday 31 July to recognise and celebrate the achievements of children in care and young people across the area.
The event provided an enjoyable and engaging afternoon to celebrate their achievements, with a wide range of activities on offer. A dedicated craft area gave attendees the chance to make flower crowns, paint rocks, try mosaic art, and build with LEGO. There was also an indoor games zone featuring football and large-scale games such as Connect 4 and Jenga.
Glitter tattoos proved to be very popular, alongside a hair academy where children and young people could learn to braid hair. There was even a space for singing and music, where those who wanted to take part could enjoy karaoke throughout the afternoon. A buffet was provided so everyone could take a break and enjoy some food together.
A special ‘celebration wall’ was filled with messages submitted by personal advisers, carers, social workers and youth support colleagues, highlighting the achievements and progress made by children and young people over the past year, from education and hobbies to personal growth and life skills.
Several of our services also took part in the event, including the libraries team, staff from our children’s centres, and the Early Years SEND team who offered sensory play for younger children and families.
Councillor Steve Owen, our Executive Member for Children’s Services, said:
It was fantastic to be able to attend the event, to recognise the achievements of our children and young people and give them a space where they could feel proud of what they’ve done. Every child’s journey is different, and it was clear from the celebration wall just how much they’ve all accomplished.
A lot of work went into setting it up, and I’m thrilled that so many teams from across the council were able to take part and give our young people such a memorable afternoon. Events like this remind us just how important it is to take time to celebrate their progress and let our looked after children know how valued they are.
