We're ramping up action against Blue Badge misuse in Central Bedfordshire
Tuesday, 6 May 2025
Our focused operation has placed 5 drivers under investigation for the misuse of Blue Badge permits, with potential legal action pending.
Blue Badges provide vital support to people with disabilities, granting access to designated parking bays that make everyday activities more manageable. When these permits are misused, it undermines the system and disadvantages those who genuinely need them.
On 1 May 2025, our officers conducted inspections of Blue Badge permits in a number of council car parks and roads with double yellow lines in Leighton Buzzard, Dunstable, Houghton Regis, Potton, Biggleswade and Sandy.
During the spot-checks, officers examined a total of 139 Blue Badges. In 5 instances, the badge owners were absent, including 2 cases in which the Blue Badge owner was deceased, thereby prompting further investigations. Additionally, 2 vehicles were discovered parked in disabled bays without a valid Blue Badge on display, and penalty charge notices have been issued.
Councillor John Baker, our Executive Member for Finance, said:
Blue Badges are a vital lifeline for many residents across Central Bedfordshire. We will not tolerate their misuse and will take firm action to protect the rights of those who genuinely rely on them. Offenders can expect fines and, where necessary, prosecution.
If you suspect someone of illegally using a Blue Badge, you can report it to us by calling 0300 300 8035 or emailing car.badges@centralbedfordshire.gov.uk.
