Funding boost means more EV charging points to be installed in Central Bedfordshire

Wednesday, 27 March 2024

More drivers could switch to electric vehicles thanks to our successful bid for £1.4 million of government funding to spend improving electric vehicle charging infrastructure in the area.

This success follows our adoption of the Central Bedfordshire Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Strategy, setting out plans to improve people’s access to electric charging across the area.

The LEVI scheme aims to boost the installation of local charging points, particularly in residential areas, and encourage investment in charging infrastructure. We will work with private sector partners to provide charging options for residents who can't easily charge at home – either because they only have access to on-street parking or other parking limitations.

Councillor Tracey Wye, our Executive Member for Sustainability and Climate Resilience, said:

This investment means even more Central Bedfordshire residents who don’t have their own off-street parking will still be able to charge an electric vehicle. Increasing charge points will enable more people to choose to go electric and means visitors can travel to the area in confidence they can stay topped up.

It’s great news as it tackles a key obstacle that prevents many of our residents from running electric vehicles, and it helps us when working in partnership with charge point operators.
