Sports and Wellbeing Award for Leighton Linslade’s Rotary Club

Wednesday, 12 June 2019

A project to establish affordable and sustainable sporting opportunities for those in the community with disabilities, saw The Rotary Club of Leighton Linslade earn a ‘Cheering Volunteering’ award.

The Club won the ‘Sports and Wellbeing’ category, sponsored by Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service, after pledging to invest £15,000 over three years and set about identifying social and technical partners in order to provide a variety of sports and within a short space of time. With the help of various partners, the “Yes We Can” program was launched which provides sporting opportunities ranging from Archery and Lawn Bowls to Football and Hockey.

The annual Cheering Volunteering event began in 2015 to thank the many volunteers and voluntary organisations across Central Bedfordshire for the often-unheralded work they do to help others in their community. This year's award ceremony took place at The Grove Theatre, Dunstable on Tuesday 4 June, with hundreds of people in attendance.

The Cheering Volunteers Awards are organised by us, working in partnership with the Volunteer Centres as part of Central Bedfordshire Together, and sponsored by Ringway Jacobs, Grand Union Housing Group, ProLogis, Jeakins Weir and Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.
