Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs)
A Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP) is a working blueprint for delivering a high-quality, accessible and safe infrastructure aimed at making towns and villages more cycling, scooting, wheeling and pedestrian friendly.
By prioritising cycling and walking infrastructure, LCWIPs should create a network that encourages residents to choose active modes of transportation for their daily commutes, errands and recreational activities. Increased wheeling, walking, cycling improves the health and wellbeing of the individual and reduces the dominance of cars, improving air quality and road safety in the local area.
The benefits extend beyond pedestrians and cyclists and aims to make life easier for users of mobility scooters, wheelchairs, pushchairs and prams.
We now have 5 Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIPs), covering the entirety of Central Bedfordshire. The LCWIPs are:
- Ampthill and Flitwick
- Biggleswade, Potton and Sandy
- Arlesey, Fairfield, Henlow and Stotfold
- Dunstable and Houghton Regis
- Leighton Linslade
From Monday 12 August until 23 September, we're asked for ideas on how to improve roads, paths and walkways to make it easier and safer to walk, wheel and cycle in rural areas. This will help shape a draft LCWIP for rural areas that will then go for formal consultation next year.
