About the consultation: Accommodation strategy for adults with care and support needs

Consultation closed: Tuesday 23 November 2021
Consultation opened: Wednesday 8 September 2021

We intend to implement an accommodation strategy for adults with care and support needs. The aim of the strategy will be to transform the life options available to this group by increasing the quality and choice of accommodation available to them. The strategy focusses on people aged between 18 and 65 with needs that arise from a learning or physical disability, a mental health condition, autism or some combination of these. The strategy also reflects our priorities in relation to the safeguarding of vulnerable adults.

The draft strategy has been developed following a review of existing accommodation and been shaped through co-production with people who currently live in supported accommodation, or who may do so in the future.

The strategy sets out our vision to facilitate the delivery of more housing for people with a range care and support needs. Whilst we believe we have a leadership role in the delivery of the strategy, we know that success will be dependent on the active involvement of other organisations across the public, voluntary and private sectors.

The strategy also sets out design principles along with options to enable people to access and sustain tenancies. The aim being to support people living with a disability or long-term condition to reach their full potential, improve their health and wellbeing and to live independent fulfilling lives.

Before adopting the strategy, we wanted to hear from those stakeholders who would be affected by it, or who would have a hand in its delivery. We therefore undertook a 12-week consultation period.
