Option 5: Proposed changes to Ivel Valley School

Option 5: Do nothing

This option would leave the school unchanged, with no changes or improvements. The school comprises approximately 55% temporary buildings and includes rooms that are too small for current class sizes using the latest design guides. Around £800,000 of maintenance work (predominantly mechanical and electrical work, and a new roof) is needed. However, the expected lifespan of the building, if maintained, is 40 - 60 years.

Cost: £800K over next three years (maintenance backlog)
When we expect the first pupils to be in new classrooms: Not applicable
Estimated completion of all works: Not applicable

Pros

  • no immediate cost

Cons

  • does not contribute to meeting the growing demand for SEND places
  • no improvements to current facilities
  • could lead to higher maintenance costs in future
  • may increase reliance on expensive out-of-area placements
  • temporary units have expiring planning consent
  • would require a substantial shift in SEND sufficiency strategy
