Inspiration – we live in thriving communities - Central Bedfordshire 2050

Inspiration - we have a prosperous and innovative economy

There are a number of places within the UK and beyond that might inform how we create more opportunities for our residents to work locally in the jobs right for them. Here are just some of the places and ideas that might help us define approaches that are right for Central Bedfordshire.

Live work balance – The Impact Hub

Innovations in technology over the past two decades have led to a notable increase in flexible working practices, and providing suitable workspaces has been a key part in this transition. The Impact Hub is one of the world’s largest communities of flexible workers, with over 16,000 members in more than 100 locations globally. It specialises in leasing flexible space to entrepreneurs, and the spaces are designed to encourage a vibrant community where residents are able to collaborate and share ideas.

Supporting local skills – ERIC Fest

ERIC Fest is a revolutionary careers advice company helping young people get into digital and creative industries. Hosting 3–4 large-scale events annually, ERIC Fest moves away from traditional careers fairs, instead delivering immersive theatre, experimental shows, and live Q&A sessions. The events equip young people with the skills and information needed to succeed, with all events and helpful digital content available free of charge.

Creating affordable space – Folkestone Creative Trust

The Folkestone Creative Foundation, established in 2002, is an arts charity dedicated to regenerating Folkestone’s historic Old Town through cultural activity. The Trust bought and refurbished rundown properties, offering 125-year peppercorn leases to artists, craftspeople, cafés and small businesses. This cultural regeneration has contributed significantly to local identity and tourism.

Innovation Growth Lab

The Innovation Growth Lab was set up by a National Lottery-funded foundation to explore how best to support entrepreneurship in the UK. It trials new support tools for innovators and rigorously evaluates them, producing evidence-based recommendations to help address common challenges faced by early-stage entrepreneurs, while also boosting the UK economy.

London Co-investment Fund

The London Co-investment Fund supports early-stage equity funding for London SMEs as part of a broader investment strategy. Managed by Funding London and Capital Enterprise, the fund was established by the London Economic Action Partnership (LEAP) and is backed by the Mayor of London. It co-invests in seed rounds of £250,000–£1,000,000 with selected partners, aiming to generate commercial success with positive social and economic outcomes.

Sheffield University Partnerships and Regional Management

The University of Sheffield has a long tradition of civic engagement, working with partners to shape a culturally and economically vibrant city. Founded in 1904 with donations from local people, the University now collaborates on regional economic development, supports arts and heritage, and leads initiatives such as the Advanced Manufacturing Innovation District and live community architecture projects.
