Future mobility – Central Bedfordshire 2050

Cyclists and pedestrians commuting on a busy city street during peak hours, with a red double-decker bus and cars in the background.

The majority of people in Central Bedfordshire rely on their cars to get around. Fewer people are using buses.

87% of households in Central Bedfordshire have at least one car. 71% of people in Central Bedfordshire travel to work by car.

We are about to see the biggest shift in the way people travel for 100 years.

Technology is leading to electric cars becoming more common. Futurologists expect that by 2040 at the latest, new ways of moving will certainly emerge.

Fewer people are learning to drive and owning their own car – this is particularly the case amongst younger people. There is a race among the traditional car manufacturers to start offering mobility services, rather than selling cars. Within the next 30 years there will be automated vehicles, while drone technology is already starting to be used for deliveries and taxi services.

The need to reduce our carbon footprints and lead healthier lives will see more people walking and cycling, but will also mean any cleaner, greener travel options become the choice for a more environmentally conscious society.

Maybe people will also decide to live closer to where they work in the future.

How might we travel in the future?

  • how many of us will own a car in 2050? how will we use it?
  • what will our streets and major roads look like?
  • will we be more active in the way we travel?
  • what will public transport look like?
  • what will average commuting times look like? will we commute at all?
