Meet Kam: former social work apprentice – discover your career in social care
Having worked with children and families for 14 years, I was thrilled to have the opportunity to train as a social worker in 2018. Joining a trailblazer group of social work apprentices for Central Bedfordshire was one of the best decisions I've made. Our group was comprised of existing staff with various experiences in either Children or Adult Services, and our formal learning took place at the University of Bedfordshire.
This program enhanced my confidence and improved my knowledge and skills. Despite challenges, such as completing this degree amid COVID-19 and quickly adapting to increased online learning, the exceptional support from my employer and the University made it all worthwhile. I wholeheartedly recommend the apprenticeship for those interested in becoming a social worker, as it provides practical and academic experience. Plus, you receive a salary.
In 2022, I became a qualified social worker and successfully completed the Assessed and Supported Year in Employment. I am now working as a Level 2 Supervising Social Worker in the Fostering team. Knowing that we are making a difference for the children and young people in our care brings me great fulfilment.
I will be returning to the University of Bedfordshire this term to complete the Practice Educator program to inspire the next generation of social workers so they, too, can make a positive difference in society and feel a sense of pride in their work, just as I do.
