Legacy mentors – discover your career in social care

Louise Purser

Louise Purser has commenced a new role as the Legacy Mentor on the 1-year pilot Children’s Services Legacy Mentor Programme. She is looking forward to meeting with 15 social workers who have completed their Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE) with us in the past 6 years who have been invited to explore their professional experiences and develop a career action plan of what support they need to continue their journey in social work with us.

The Legacy Mentor Programme will offer social workers time to share their aspirations with an experienced practitioner who is passionate about their profession, who promotes good practice, is empathetic, patient, listens, and can advise, guide, coach, and mentor social workers on their professional journey. The aim is to support social workers to continue their career with us as they enhance their expertise, sharing their knowledge and enhancing their leadership skills when working with families and professionals. Their managers will continue to support their professional development, supervise and appraise them in their day-to-day work.

The pilot will be evaluated through initial feedback with a more depth evaluation of the programme in spring 2025. A plan can then be developed on how to use the Legacy Mentor Programme to support our other social workers who are wondering what the next step in their development and career is. One social worker following their first meeting has fed back:

Thank you for listening and giving me support in knowing what I can do next year in increase my opportunities to develop others.
