The Children’s Act of 1989 defines a child or young person that has been in the care of a local authority for more than 24 hours as a "looked after child."
Children in care often live with foster carers (or kinship foster carers), but children in care may also live in residential children’s homes or residential settings like schools, secure units, or semi-independent living accommodation.
