Plans for a new primary school in Houghton Regis
We’re moving forward with plans for a new primary school at the Bidwell West area of Houghton Regis, to help support growing communities in the town and the surrounding area.
We are planning for a new two-form entry primary school to be built and opened by September 2029, with nursery provision and specialist facilities for special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
The school will help provide more local school places for families living in Bidwell West, Linmere and nearby communities.
Why is the school being built?
As part of our regular review of school place planning, we continually assess admissions and forecast data to understand local need. The latest information shows growing demand for primary school places in Houghton Regis and neighbouring communities, and this recommendation reflects that updated picture.
In 2026, the new admissions information showed demand for primary school places in Houghton Regis was increasing. All primary schools in the area were full when initial places for September 2026 were allocated.
Alongside this, housing growth across the wider area continues, with thousands more homes still planned.
Updated data and changing pupil movement patterns mean additional school places are now needed to support local children and families.
As well as creating more places close to home, the new school will support our wider ambition to create a sustainable two-tier education system across Central Bedfordshire, though schools in Houghton Regis are already operating within the primary and secondary model.
Questions and answers
Has our position changed?
School place planning is not static and we have to respond to the latest available evidence. Since previous reports were considered, updated admissions information, continued housing growth and changing pupil movement patterns have shown increasing pressure on places in Houghton Regis and surrounding communities.
We understand residents have followed this issue closely over several years and appreciate there have been changes as circumstances and data have evolved. The important thing now is that the latest evidence supports progressing plans for a new school to meet growing local demand.
Why were previous forecasts different?
Forecasts are based on the best information available at the time. As with any forecasting model, they are continually reviewed and updated as new information becomes available. What we have seen since the start of 2026 is stronger than anticipated local demand linked to housing growth and wider movement of pupils across neighbouring areas.
We recognise how important access to local school places is for families. That is exactly why we have continued reviewing the data and why we are now moving these plans forward based on the latest admissions and housing information.
Why are there falling pupil place numbers elsewhere in Central Bedfordshire, but Houghton Regis needs a new school?
While some parts of Central Bedfordshire are experiencing falling pupil numbers overall, Houghton Regis is a very different picture because of the scale of housing growth taking place locally. School place planning must reflect localised demand, not just county-wide trends.
What if the data changes again?
Our plans are based on the most up-to-date admissions data, housing delivery information, and forecast modelling currently available to us. This includes actual reception allocations for September 2026, which showed that all Houghton Regis primary schools were full when 2026 places were allocated.
Could the plans change again?
We have a statutory duty to keep school place demand under review and respond to changing circumstances. However, the 2026 evidence for this decision clearly shows increasing pressure on places in this area and the need for additional provision.
How will the school be funded?
Contributions, called section 106 funds, have been secured from the housing developers of the Bidwell West and Linmere sites, as well as the required land for a primary school. No taxpayer or council funding is required.
